Metallica at the Quebec summer festival...well what I have seen...
It was the beginning of spring. I had purchased my pass for the Quebec Summer Festival an finally, I got it through the mail.
A few months later, even if I had lost my job and was short of cash, I gathered the little money that I had, fuled up the car and drove 3 hours to get to Quebec City. I got to Quebec about 5 hours before the doors were scheduled to open.
Panels were pointing towards the line to enter and 3 km later, here I am waiting to enter the site.
Around 6h30 pm, the line starts moving and I figured that even if I was far behind the first persons in line I could make my way up once on the site since I was alone.
About a 100 feet before the gates, a police officer approched us and told us that the site might be closed due to overcrowding. I was surprised, but I knew that it had happened in the past years as the Festival sells more passes than the total capacity of the site. This is by the way the only Festival that I know of that uses that kind of practices.
I was at about 20 feet from the entrance when the order came to shut down the gates. At this moment, the police told us that we could watch the show from the back of the site on the giant screens. A few fans stayed at the gates wishing that the gate would reopened, but this never happened. At one point, the police mentionned again that places were available at the back of the screen. I decided to go to the back of the site and see how it was. I found myself in the middle of about 40 000 fans, on top of a hill with a semi blocked view of the screen.
At that point, I decided to walk back to my car and leave back to Montreal.
This roadtrip was a total waste of time and money. I do seriously think that the festival put in jeopardy the festival's integrity by selling more passes than the site can accomodate and I do not think that they realise how that practice could cause a potential security threat.
The festival excuse themselves by saying that the passes does not garanty the entrance to the site, which honnestly suprises me. I have never seen a purchased service not being garantied. Most of all, the passes were acquired through the Metallica Fan Club.
I had made excellent comment about the Quebec Summer Festival before, but this experience makes me doubt about the seriousness of the Festival and especially, their sense of customer service.
